分級讀本 Graded Readers & Leveled
Readers 蘇正隆
Graded Readers 叫「分級讀本」,Leveled Readers 也叫「分級讀本」,到底有何區別?
不久前逢甲大學有個 World Congress on Extensive Reading 研討會,美國 Teacher Created Materials 出版社來了兩位講者:Gio Panizzon 和 Kim Bernard,他們清楚的說明 Graded Readers 和 Leveled Readers 的不同:
Graded Readers 是專門針對非母語的 second language learners 設計的分級讀本,Graded readers are books that have had the language level simplified to help second language learners read them. The language is graded for vocabulary, complexity of grammar structures and also by the number of words.
譬如 BBC TeachingEnglish 網站推薦,在亞洲極受歡迎的 Helbling Readers 系列,就是 Graded Readers。該網站有篇介紹分級讀本教學的文章:

https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/art…/using-graded-readers
(Helbling Readers 分紅、藍、綠三系列,各有總經銷。紅色是書林, 藍色是寂天, 綠色是育聖)
而 Leveled Readers,如 TCM 的 TIME FOR KIDS® Nonfiction Readers 以及剛推出的 Smithsonian STEAM Readers 則是為母語讀者編的讀本,一般是參照 Lexile 來分級,Scholastic 的讀本也都有 Scholastic Reader Level 1: I SPY Collection; Scholastic Reader Level 2: The Magic School Bus Rides Again 之類的分級標記。
對台灣的學生而言,Graded Readers 讀起來比較容易,Leveled Readers 較具挑戰,最好兩種類型交替閱讀,才能奠立紮實的英語基礎。(Jerome Su, August 19, 19)
